World Textile and Apparel Trade and Production Trends: Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey

Egyptian textile and clothing exports fared badly during January-June 2012, having declined by 10.2% compared with the corresponding period a year earlier. The decrease stemmed from weak sales in Egypt's largest foreign markets—the EU and the USA. Nevertheless, production data for the financial year ending June 30, 2011, show that output of all the major textile and clothing products increased. In Morocco, clothing exports have expanded only moderately over the last few years, having been dragged down by sluggish demand in the EU market. During January-June 2012, clothing exports were up by a meagre 1.8% compared with the corresponding period a year earlier, following an increase of just 3.6%) in 2011. However, textile and clothing exports to the USA rose in 2011 as exporters benefited from duty-free treatment under the United States-Morocco Free Trade Agreement. Furthermore, Morocco established itself as one of the USA's fastest growing suppliers of textiles and clothing—although exports remained relatively small.
