Survey of the European Yarn and Fabric Fairs for Autumn/Winter 2008/09

Europe's yarn and fabric fairs for the autumn/winter 2008/09 season delivered some positive results for the region's hard-pressed spinners and fabric manufacturers.The atmosphere at the Pitti Filati Imagine yarn fair in Florence was busy,reflecting continuing demand for high quality yarns for the knitwear trade.The improvement in business even persuaded some spinners to return to the Expofil yarn fair in Paris,an event which has been getting smaller in recent years.Spinners and fabric manufacturers report that they have had some success in recovering business lost to cheaper competitors in China and other parts of Asia.Textile mills have been fighting back with innovative designs,high quality products,and a high level of customer service-including shorter delivery times.The season's products are characterised by a mood of simple classic elegance.But many fabrics which appear to be simple have been subjected to a complex range of treatments and finishes to acquire a certain look or handle.Glamour for evening wear is being achieved with the use of shiny surfaces,metallics and sequins.In general,however,colours for the season are muted,and the emphasis is on natural neutrals,pastel shades,blacks and browns.The trend for eco-friendly materials and manufacturing processes is gathering pace.Spinners are using organic cotton and natural dyes.Fabric manufacturers are using organic cotton and recycled polyester.In addition,they are developing new dyeing and printing processes which conserve energy and water.
