Letter to the editor: Impact of prophylactice percutaneous endoscopic gasatrostomy on malnutrition and QOL in patients with head and neck cancer: A randomized study

I congratulate the authors of this randomized controlled trial, which demonstrates that in Sweden, patients with prophylactic percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes do not experience detrimental deterioration of swallowing with subsequent reduction in quality of life after chemoradiation therapy for head and neck cancer. In fact, in this study, patients with PEG tubes had improved quality of life 6 months posttreatment when compared to their counterparts who had routine swallowing therapy and nasogastric tubes, as needed.
