A Novel Approach to Mapping SQL Relational Schemata to OWL Ontologies

A novel approach is proposed. This approach maps a relational schema that is represented in SQL to an ontology that is represented in OWL. The approach is based on an analysis of key, data and column correlations as well as their combinations. The approach has two main advantages: (1) it suits legacy systems that often come with a relational schema only; and (2) it extracts an ontology that has a hierarchical structure and that is no longer "impaired" by optimization and bad database design of the relational schema. The approach can be used for migrating HTML pages that are dynamically generated from a relational database to the ontology-based Semantic Web.
