More attention needed towards consumer satisfaction

Food safety and quality were two significant consumer issues in the 90's. Public advocacy groups have found common ground with environmentalists and proponents of animal right to create strong pressure groups in EU countries and other industrialized nations. This is reflected in legislation promoting apparent consumer well-being at the expense of producers. Recent EU activity relating to the use of feed-additives including antibiotic growth enhancers is not based on scientific risk assessment, but is a reflection of political pressures and consumer pressure. There is a school of thought that attributes some EU legislation to the desire to reduce production and hence decrease agricultural subsidies.
