A new unit comprising 266,000 laying hens recently started operations near Smolensk in Russia. Its primary objective is to secure the Smolensk Flour Milling and Manufacturing Company. Rufat Tabasaranski is chairman of the board of directors of Smolensk Flour Milhng and Manufacturing Company, an open joint stock company launched in 2007. "This flour milling unit was old, as it started its business in 1946 but I bought it", says Tabasaranski who worked for the Russian Ministry of Bread (former name ofthe Russian Ministry of agriculture) from 1995 to 2006. Smolensk milling company actually processes 5,000 tonnes wheat and 500 tonnes rye/month and also produces 5,000 tonnes feed/month (for pigs, dairy and poultry). A first step in rebuilding the plantcame in the form of 120,000 euros of investments, mainly to start the production of small pellets for chicks. "The feed business is very hard and we have many competitors coming from the other neighbouring oblasts", explains Tabasaranski who decided to buy an old laying hens unit in 2008 in order to secure his first business (milling and feed production). From the five milHon euros in investments, four million euros were spent rebuilding the farm over a period of two years. The poultry farm is located near Smolensk and began producing eggs last August. "We started our project during the financial crisis and our main concern was to find banks to support us", remembers Tabasaranski who succeeded in gaining initial investments from the banks to start rebuilding.
