If there is one country that is expected to compete with China for a share of attention from the pump industry during the next 10 years it is India. However, the Indian pump industry faces challenges of its own from multinational players, growing population and the ever increasing demand for water. In this issue's 'regional focus', we take a brief look at the involvement of one well-known European manufacturer in India and a technological article examining NPSHA from an Indian pump engineer. However, we begin with an overview of the Indian pump industry by Anil Upadhyay. In the last few decades, the Indian pump industry has witnessed high growth, due to infrastructure developments taking place after independence in 1947, and demands at a local level for pumps to cater increasing populations. Until recently, Government restrictions for imports also helped indigenous manufacturers.
