Stormwater removal has its own peculiar set of problems such as unpredictable flows, debris, and fluctuating power demands. When one town's system proved to be inadequate, ABB's intelligent pump control software provided an energy-efficient answer. Home to some 20,000 people, the town of Pietarsaari is located on Finland's west coast about 400 km north of the capital Helsinki, Pietarsaari is a low-lying town and the center often used to flood during rainy weather. This is because the stormwater removal system - consisting of pipes feeding into an open channel draining into the sea - did not have sufficient capacity to cope with very rainy periods.
