The coccidiosis challenge: Crossing the chasm by vaccination or feed solution?

Coccidiosis is and remains an important disease in poultry production. The damage caused by the disease is high. New strategies have to be adopted to better control the disease and to reduce or eliminate the losses. Coccidiosis costs 0.05 per EUR 2.2kg broiler. This figure was presented at the recent European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition (ESPN) in Strasbourg, France. The loss results not only from what was called 'visual coccidiosis' due to measurable gut lesions, but primarily due to sub-clinical(non-visual) coccidiosis. With this cost impact on broiler production worldwide, coccidiosis control is still a major item on the agenda of feed companies, field veterinarians and farmers. However, clouds are appearing in the sky concerning the uncontrolled use of coceidiostats. A new way of tackling this subject will therefore be required.
