Avian influenza causing a poultry industry crisis. Vaccination may help to control avian influenza in East Asia.

Two articles discuss the crisis in the poultry industry caused by avian influenza, and consider possible controls. Topics considered in the first article include the H5N1 virus outbreak in Hong Kong in 1997; essential prerequisites for emergence of a human influenza pandemic; food safety and lack of biosecurity measures, especially in South-east Asia; the occupational hazard/prophylactic approach; and veterinary networks. The second article examines the role of vaccination of poultry and of other measures (including eradication) as attempts to control avian influenza in Asian countries.
