To improve the impact resistance of plastic substrates coated with a hard coat, an elastomeric polymer resin, such as a polyurediane coating, can be used as a primer layer between the transparent plastic substrate and the abrasion resistant hard coat. The polyurethane primer coating acts to absorb energy from impact to the hard coat and prevent shattering or cracks from propagating from the hard coat into the transparent plastic substrate.
