Isohexides form a group of sugar-derived secondary rigid diols consisting of three isomers, namely isosorbide (l,4:3,6-dianhydrosorbitol), isoidide (l,4:3,6-dianhydroiditol) and isomannide (1,4:3,6-dianhydromannitol). Isohexides have been the subject of intensive research in polymers design; however, the relatively poor reactivity of the secondary hydroxyl groups has been recognised as the main drawback, which consequently resulted in low molecule weight polymers, or otherwise discoloration or chain scissions if higher temperature or longer reaction time were required.
