There has been much interest in recent years in polymer nanocomposites based on intercalated and exfoliated particles (dating back to Toyota's R&D work reported in the early 1990s). Much of the work published has been based on smectite clays bearing an anionic layer charge, such as montmorillonite and hectorite. However, it has been pointed out that inversely charged layered particles in the form of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are readily available and their lamellar nature permits host-guest chemistry and intercalation reactions. Therefore LDHs are suitable as fillers for the formulation of waterborne polyurethane nanocomposites.
