Coatings are applied to the interior of food and beverage cans in order to prevent the contents causing corrosion of the metal container and thence contaminating the food or beverage. This is particularly true for acidic contents such as tomato-based products and soft drinks.Traditionally, various epoxy-based and polyvinyl chloride-based coatings have been used, but there are concerns regarding the recycling of polyvinyl chloride and related halogen-containing vinyl polymers, and government authorities are becoming increasingly restrictive of any free bisphenol A and its diglycidyl ether present in the coatings.
