Low-VOC additives for extending wet edge and open times of coatings

It is important to be able to repair slight irregularities in a still-wet coating after a short period of time by re-brushing over the affected area, but at the same time a coating should have relatively short tack-free times. Waterborne coatings typically have a less than adequate open and wet edge time to repair irregularities (certainly compared with open times of 30-45 minutes for solventborne alkyd coatings), due largely to the use of dispersed high molecular weight polymers, which tend to coalesce quickly after application in the edge region.
