Surface coatings function to protect or improve the appearance of a substrate or both. No matter how carefully the coatings are designed, manufactured, and applied to the substrate they will eventually fail. Failure of coatings systems occurs by many different modes and mechanisms, many of which have been investigated thoroughly.
