Application of marine biotechnology in the production of natural biocides for testing on environmentally innocuous antifouling coatings

Biofouling,the adherence and accumulation of biotic deposits on submerged structures,causes structural problems and is expensive to control and remove.On ships,biofouling can significantly increase fuel consumption and affect speed and manoeuvrability.Some of the most effective materials used to control biofouling are organotin compounds(eg tributyltin compounds),but from 1 January 2008,these organotin compounds should no longer be in use.
