An African dream of self-sufficiency is one step closer to realization with the construction of a new shellfish hatchery on this East African island. From the minds and labs of aquaculture scientists in Massachusetts to the shores of this East Africanisland, a newly built shellfish hatchery is the first step in a plan to give local farming women a new economic future. Funded by the McKnight Foundation Africa Grants Program and the island Greek Oysters Foundation the project looks to introduce shellfish hatchery and shellfish growout techniques to Zanzibar, Tanzania and to engage several hundred women farmers from six villages to generate 50,000 to 100,000 kg of shellfish meats per year from hatchery-raised shellfish.
