A ccording to recent surveys, the US channel catfish industry produces approximately 2.25 billion eggs annually. Nationally, hatch rates from individual catfish spawnings vary greatly within and among hatcheries: reported rates average around 79% withsome hatcheries getting less than 60% success. Several factors, including disease, environment, and overall management practices, can affect the number of viable fry produced from a kilogram of eggs. Most common hatchery management practices result in adequate, but not always optimal, hatch and fry survival rates, but how those practices can affect actual numbers of viable fry produced has received little attention.
