The European Salmon War: Scottish hatcheries, smolt producers and small farms threatened

Brussels: William Crowe advisor on European affairs for Scottish Quality Salmon tells a sorry tale when describing the present state of Scottish aquaculture. During the last year prices have dropped and several smaller hatcheries and smolt producers are likely to go out of business. Some of the smaller salmon growers did not buy smolt last year and do not intend to do so this year either. There are more than 10 smolt-producing companies in Scotland and all are suffering. Crowe explained that of the 48 million smelts produced last year only 40 million were sold. He fears that several egg and broodstock producers will lay off staff and important knowledge and skills will be lost.
