Spring Viremia of Carp: European Virus Reported in North America

Spring Viremia of Carp Virus (SVCV) was described as an "emerging virus" by Dr. Andrew Goodwin at the Fifth International Symposium for Viruses of Lower Vertebrates held in Seattle in 2002. The first outbreak with clinical signs consistent with SVC occurred in April 2002 in the Eastern US. A second occurred in Wisconsin in May-June of 2002, more than 2000 km from the first infected farm. SVC virus is one of only five fish pathogens listed as "notifiable" in the 2002 International Aquatic Animal Health Code of the Office Internationale des Epizooties (DIE).
