Haddock culture in Atlantic Canada

Haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus, a bottom dwelling species in the cod family, occur on both sides of the North Atlantic, where they have been fished extensively. The abundance of most wild stocks is sadly depressed and all are now subject to quotarestrictions. Nevertheless, the fine eating qualities of this fish, and the high demand for it, fresh, frozen or smoked, make it a natural candidate for aquaculture. In the wild, haddock feed on crustaceans, echinoderms, mollusks and other small fish. They grow rapidly until they reach sexual maturity. The maximum size of the adult fish is 4.5 kg and 65 cm in length.
