Genetic variability, correlation and path analysis in brinjal (Solanum melongena L.)

Phenotypic coefficient of variation was greater than genotypic coefficient of variation for all the traits under study. High was recorded for percentage fruit set, seed to pulp ratio, weight of fruit, leaf area index, seed weight per fruit, number offruits per plant and number of fruits per cluster. High heritability accompanied by high genetic advance was observed for weight of fruit while, days to last picking, percent fruit set and plant height had high heritability with moderate genetic advance.This suggests that genetic yield amelioration may be possible through selection based on phenotypic performance of these traits. The correlation between yield and its attributing characters indicated that yield per plant was significantly and positivelyassociated with number of fruits per plant, percentage fruit set, leaf area index and plant height. Path coefficient analysis showed that weight of fruit, number of fruits per plant, days to flower initiation, seed weight per fruit, leaf area index, number of fruits per cluster, days to first picking, length of fruits and number of branches per plant exerted direct positive effect on yield per plant. Hence, direct selection for such traits shall improve yield in brinjal.
