ISO-paraffin alkylation is a refinery process designed to produce high-octane alkylate by reacting iso-butane with light olefins using either sulfuric or hydrofluoric acid as catalyst.Exelus has developed a revolutionary new alkylation process using a benign solid acid catalyst and a novel fixed bed reactor as an economically viable alternative to conventional alkylation processes.Development of the benign solid acid catalyst and the fixed-bed reactor were discussed in earlier articles (World Refining,January/February 2005 & March 2005).This report summarizes the economic evaluation of this new technology and compares the results with conventional liquid acid processes.
