Preparing for prospective clinical trials: A national initiative of an excellence registry for consecutive pancreatic cancer resections

Remarkable progress has been made in preventing surgical morbidity and mortality related to pancreatic resections over the past decades. Nowadays, patients undergoing oncologic resection for pancreatic malignancies carry a low risk of surgery-related death in specialized centers [1], but the long-term survival remains poor [2]. Unfortunately, both the aggressive biologic nature and the relatively low incidence still hamper the study and management of these malignancies. As a consequence, there is an urgent need for well-conducted, adequately powered studies evaluating new oncologic treatment modalities.
