New onboard flight-management software has been developed by Honeywell International that gives pilots the ability to change altitude while flying long distances over water and to have more-precise airport approaches. This technology could save millions for airlines in fuel costs. The altitude change would allow pilots to save time and fuel during the flight by avoiding headwinds or flying at higher altitudes where air is thinner and burns less fuel to fly through. A United Continental spokeswoman said 16 test flights have been completed with the new software.
