Shortly after the new, 325K-b/d crude unit was brought online in June at the firm's Port Arthur, Texas (US) refinery, the CDU experienced piping damage necessitating a shutdown for repairs expected to conclude this Dec. The new unit was an expansion that took five years to construct. Once the full 600K-b/d capacity is brought back online, more Gulf Coast products will be available at the plant, which has prompted wholesale gasoline prices in the Gulf Coast to drop in anticipation. Motiva said it plans to have the VPS-5 unit return to production by late Dec, while Port Arthur continues to process crude through the older 285K-b/d section of the plant.
