The Austrian energy firm has stated that it will spend $299MM to enhance butadiene production from its 193K-b/d Schwechat, Austria and 73K-b/d Berghausen, Germany refineries. OMV stated that the new capacity at Schwechat will be online in June 2014 while the Berghausen unit will startup in 2Q 2015. Both facilities are integrated with nearby PC production facilities; according to the company, the new capacity will represent 6% of overall butadiene production in Europe. Commenting on the additions an OMV executive board member said, "We are investing in these facilities in order to build on the synergies from our sites in Berghausen and Schwechat as regards petrochemicals. By optimizing our production portfolio we gain a significant additional increase in earnings potential and can improve our competitive position long-term."
