Takeover of TNK-BP propels Rosneft to the top, keeps BP in Russia

UK-based BP has entered a 90-day exclusivity period with Russian state oil major Rosneft as the two companies hash out final terms for the $27B sale of BP's 50% stake in TNK-BP. Rosneft has also agreed to acquire the remaining 50% interest of TNK-BP from AAR (Alfa-Access-Renova) for $28B. AAR is a conglomerate of Russian oil billionaires which made BP's nine-year TNK-BP involvement a lucrative headache for the oil major. Since 2003, BP has received $19B in dividends from the project.
