The National Petroleum Council (NPC) recendy reported that oil is more abundant in the US than what was previously thought to be available. Also reported was the increasing ability for the US to become self-sufficient for oil by using the same drilling and production techniques as employed for shale gas. It noted that shale formations like the Bakken and Eagle Ford plays could produce as much as 2-3MM b/d by 2035, while the US and Canada combined could produce as much as 22.5MM b/d of oil under the best conditions. According to Goldman Sachs, the US, which is currently the world's third biggest oil producer behind only Saudi Arabia and Russia, will take the top spot by 2017.
