Shipments of refined products from the US have more than doubled over the last five years, according to shipbroker Clarkson Pic, with waterborne volumes expected to rise 4.8% in 2013 to 2.39MM b/d, the greatest amount seen since 2000. US exports have been a significant driver behind rising rates for product shipping; Clarkson reports that oil-product tankers have seen their earnings so far this year rise to $12,825/day, a five-year high that is up 20% from 2012 rates. By comparison, rates hit a record of $49,273/day in 2006, but plunged to $3,491/day in April 2009 as the global financial crisis and subsequent recession plowed into the market.
