Petrochemical industry to expand in Alberta next year.

The Canadian province's Dept on Enterprise, which encourages and facilitates diverse energy investment and economic development, expects to see increased petrochemical investment next year as Alberta oilsands production ramps up, with attendant increases in offgas from production sites. Offgas, which is derived from oilsands operations and bitumen upgrades, is composed of gases such as ethane, propane, butylenes, and butane, as well as hydrogen. According to the Dept's assistant deputy minister, Justin Riemer, "Drilling of liquids-rich gas in the province and [the likelihood of] additional volumes of offgas to be made available from the oilsands upgrading process is spurring interest.. .1 am optimistic we will see more investments in the ethane and propane value chain, as an additional 110K b/d of offgas is available in Alberta."
