With the US shale gas revolution making LNG imports increasingly uneconomic, the number of LNG export applications being filed with the Department of Energy (DOE) is mounting. As US producers bid to take advantage of higher gas prices elsewhere in the world, two more projects and one company applied this month, bringing the number of proposals to 13 and planned export capacity to roughly 19.5 billion cubic feet per day - or nearly a quarter of current estimated US output of 82 Bcf/d, and equivalent to a massive 149 million tons per year of LNG. Eight applications are to convert facilities either used or planned as import terminals, underlining the transformation wrought by shale gas on the US gas market over the past seven years.
