Mexico's energy ministry is calling for rapid development of the country's massive shale gas resources in a bid to replicate the production surge north of the border.A government strategy document says shale gas development could hoist Mexico's total gas production to II.47 bil-Uon cubic feet per day (119 billion cubic meters per year) by 2026 - from 5.8 Bcf/d last year - although without big investment, the "inertia" forecast is a rise to 8.96 Bcf/d. The ministry predicts shale gas output will reach 200 milUon cubic feet per day by 2016 and could rise to 1.34 Bcf/d just by drilling on the Mexican side of the Eagle Ford play in southern Texas, but could hit 3.28 Bcf/d if other shale plays are opened up.
