Nearly two years after BP's Macondo disaster in the US Gulf, the spotlight has again turned on offshore oil and gas safety after a huge gas leak at Total's UK North Sea Elgin platform on Mar. 25. The accident prompted the French energy giant to shut in output from Elgin and the satellite Franklin and West Franklin fields, which together account for at least one-tenth of UK gas production.
