EDF Seeks Gas-fired Power, Maybe Neighboring Utilities

It appears that EDF has more than gas trading in mind as it develops channels for importing LNG into France and Belgium (WGI Dec. 19,p3). The French power incumbent is aiming to bring on line 4,000 megawatts of predominantly gas-fired generating capacity, mostly by 2010, as a means to reduce its reliance on baseload nuclear power, make its output more flexible, and trim imports of peak-load power (WGI Jul.11,p7). Rumors of pending bids for utilities in neighboring countries suggest that takeovers could be yet another pathway to diversification for Europe's largest utility.
