When the idea of liquefying gas on a ship gathered momentum in 2008-09, some saw it as a potentially game-changing solution to the budget blowouts and delays plaguing land-based LNG projects. Others questioned the costs and safety implications of putting a complex liquefaction plant on a ship. A crucial test of the floating concept's technical viability should come later this year on start-up of the world's first-ever floating LNG (FLNG) project, Malaysian Petronas' PFLNG Satu.
