Cove, Statoil Keep Spotlight on East Africa

The buzz surrounding East Africa's deep-water gas riches — and the potential for LNG exports to Asia — is growing ever louder. A bidding war has erupted for East Africa-focused Cove Energy, whose prime asset is an interest in massive gas finds on Mozambique's side of the Rovuma Basin, while Norway's Statoil has announced a big gas discovery on the Tanzanian side. The find, described as the biggest in Tanzanian history, adds to the booming reserves growth in the basin, which is now widely seen as able to support multiple LNG projects.
