Algeria Readies Medgaz Pipe

Testing of the 8 billion cubic meter per year (774 million cubic feet per day) Medgaz pipeline linking Algeria to Spain reached a final phase last week, when on Mar. 1 gas was allowed to enter the subsea section of the pipeline. Yet uncertainty remains. On Mar. 5, the valve connecting Medgaz with the Spanish gas system in Almeria was opened and the Medgaz consortium said that same day it anticipates "that the pipeline will be technically ready to operate within weeks." Medgaz shareholders are Algeria's state Sonatrach, Spanish trio Cepsa, Iberdrola and Endesa, and GDF Suez.
