BG Bets Big On CBM — And Going Global

BG became the first international LNG player to make a big bet on the nascent coalbed methane (CBM) to LNG business with last week's announcement of a A12.9 billion (US12.1 billion) bid for Australian gas utility Origin Energy. With what is its third Asia-Pacific move in 2008, the firm, long thought of as the consummate Atlantic Basin LNG trader, also trumpeted its intention to become a global player, upstream and down. Like the Qataris and others once intent on feeding what was expected to be a ravenous US LNG market, BG is now following the top dollar into Asia's still oil-indexed markets.
