Algeria's Spot-Oriented Future

Algeria's LNG future is shaping up to be one centered on short-term contracts and spot sales, rather than the long-term contracts that have traditionally underpinned LNG investment, Energy Minister Chakib Khelil tells WGI. "In our case, most of the LNG plants will [soon] be amortized," Khelil explained, "so we could be selling on the spot market if there is a need for it very soon. We already have 10% [spare LNG capacity], so within the next 10 years we could have a big amount of LNG on the spot market — and there's no reason why we could not divert cargoes like you do now for oil from Europe to the US, or wherever the price is better."
