Argentina, Uruguay Look Harder At LNG

The urge for LNG is spreading rapidly in South America, where gas shortages have become endemic. Argentina recently signed two agreements, with Uruguay and Venezuela, for building separate receiving terminals to help smooth severe gas shortages that date back to 2004 and are getting worse (WGI Mar.5,p7). In Uruguay, the plan is to build a 25 million cubic meter (880 million cubic foot) per day onshore regasification plant west of the capital city of Montevideo. The estimated 1.5 billion-2.5 billion tab would be picked up by the state oil companies of Argentina and Uruguay — Enarsa and Ancap — in partnership with a still unnamed private investor.
