Italy is reaching out to Algeria to allay its fears of a cartel-like alliance developing between Algeria's Sonatrach and Russia's Gazprom following the cooperation agreement between the two state firms announced in August (WGI Aug.23,p8).Economic Development Minister Pier Luigi Bersani last week visited Algiers to try and boost the sinking profile of the planned 8 billion cubic meter per year (774 million cubic foot per day) Galsi pipeline that would link Algeria directly to Italy via Sardinia - apparently with some success.
