Europe Getting More Storage, But Is Storage Good Insurance?

Last winter's cutoff in Russian gas flows through Ukraine highlighted the importance of gas storage and Europe's need to have more of it. Or did it? With their heavy focus on security of supply, the European Commission and most European gas regulators take the affirmative view, and infrastructure investors appear to agree, with 9 billion cubic meters (318 billion cubic feet) of new working gas storage under construction, representing a nearly 12% rise from today's 77 Bcm total, and another 8 Bcm in an advanced stage of planning.
