Unlike much of the world, Europe in particular, government policy in the US favors natural gas use. President Barack Obama has been reluctant to throw up significant obstacles to gas or oil production, since the industry proved a rare economic bright spot in his first term, with booming shale-derived output helping to generate jobs, spawn an industrial renaissance and keep down energy prices.
