Coal could be set for a comeback in Europe's power generation sector thanks to high gas prices - which are generally indexed to oil - as well as security of supply and energy diversity concerns,as the region becomes more dependent on imported gas for its energy needs.Some limited scope is seen in the short term for conventional coal-fired plants,but given greenhouse gas emission restrictions,future efforts are likely to focus on advanced clean coal technology that reduces carbon as well as other emissions,a direction in which US generators are also increasingly turning(WGI Feb.23,p7).
