The massive LNG 18 conference opened in Perth on Apr. 12 to an energetic welcome from local aboriginal peoples, in seeming acknowledgment of their support in building up Australia to become the world's top LNG exporter by 2020. But the feel-good factor could not disguise the industry's underlying unease. While opening day speakers focused on the bright long-term future for gas in the wake of the unexpectedly successful Paris climate conference in December, that won't happen unless the industry gets its act together and makes gas competitive against coal and renewables.
