CCS Needs to Win Friends to Get Off the Ground

Of all the routes to a low-carbon energy future, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is among the most crucial, since it could slash greenhouse gases while keeping a strong fossil fuel sector in place as global energy demand soars. But without stronger support, many fear it could be left at the starting gate. While renewable energy technologies such as wind and solar have powered ahead and cut costs sharply, CCS remains stuck in the expensive, infant stage and has seen only modest investments from utilities and governments.
