Gazprom Says Pays The Price for EU Policy

Gazprom is paying the price for the way Europe's gas and renewables markets are regulated, according to its pricing and contracts chief, Sergei Komlev. Russian gas exports to Europe and Turkey jumped by 24% to 139.7 billion cubic meters (13.5 billion cubic feet per day) last year, while Gazprom's sales, including North Sea gas and LNG, leapt 16% to 161.5 Bcm (WGI Jan.22'14). But much of the growth came because Gazprom cut prices to stop its Italian and German markets from shrinking — Eni, for example, saw its oil-indexed price reduced by 10%. Cuts weren't made across the board, however: Lithuanian gas utility Lietuvos Dujos said last week it was taking Gazprom to arbitration over pricing, backed by its largest shareholder, Germany's E.On, while Germany's RWE said it has begun repricing talks with the Russian gas giant, against which it won an arbitration case last year.
