As the United Arab Emirates moves to hoist gas imports and push ahead with costly sour gas developments to meet growing demand, Abu Dhabi is starting to weigh its future as an LNG exporter. The UAE has been exporting LNG to Japan since the 1970s through majority state-owned Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Co. (Adgas). It now delivers almost 6 million tons per year of LNG, representing around 800 million cubic feet per day of gas, to Tokyo Electric Power Co. (Tepco). But with growth in local gas demand outpacing supply, Abu Dhabi must decide what to do when the Tepco contract expires in 2019.
